Are There Any D&d Sort Of Role Playing Games Online?

Apparently I wasn’t clear enough he first time I asked this question. I really want to try my hand at role playing games, but it’s hard to find friends that want to try it. Are there any role playing games online? And no I don’t mean games like World of Warcraft.
I want a game where I can join a small group of adventurers on a journey led by a dungeon master, where the dungeon master plays the NPCs and can change the story depending on the parties actions. The party can do whatever we want, rather than be held down by a finite list of commands. I am not looking for a computer game. I am looking for a Dungeon & Dragons type role-playing game that is simply played online rather than in person.
For example, if I tell the dungeon master that I want to french kiss the troll I just killed, the dungeon master might say that I just got a disease from doing so, and inflict some damage or other nerf to my character. Get it?

There are a couple choices. You can do a chat-based rpg like can be found here: http://chat.rpghost.com/
Or you can try a MUD game, which is older than dirt. Try the MUD dungeon with the zmud program here: http://www.zuggsoft.com/zmud/zmudinfo.ht…

There’s plenty of games run via chat rooms or email. Do a search in your favourite search engine for PBEM, and you’ll find tons of links for them.
If you’ve never played games like D&D before, you might want to lurk in a game for a bit, follow the story and what not. There are tons of games out there, with many of them accepting lurkers (I allow lurkers in my games, but not all DMs do).
I would also suggest getting your hands on the rulebooks or a “quickstart” guide for the game.
    Hope this helps.

Hey man I feel for you. I’ve had the same problems lately. My work schedule made it so that I can’t run the normal games I have and I’ve been looking for a substitute. The closest thing I’ve found is some Yahoo Groups tha may or may not have what you’re looking for. Depends on if you can find active groups that aren’t just nests for spammers.
I also found this website that I’ve not checked into completely (still in the proccess of it though).

They say that they are an online gamer community with integrated dice rolling systems. I hope this helps you.

Neverwinter Nights and Neverwinter Nights 2 are both RPGs set in the Dungeons and Dragons setting of Faerun (I think I spelled that right). In it, you make a character, just like a Dungeons and Dragons game, and play the story. The multiplayer of both allows a single or multiple people to DM an adventure, and they are both very fun games that I highly recommend.

World of Warcraft (WoW) is a massive multiplayer online game (as if you hadn’t heard about it already),one that has such vast landscapes for players to traverse. World of Warcraft is the highly anticipated from Blizzard Entertainment that plunges you deeper into the Warcraft universe than ever possible before.Create a character choosing among eight possible starting races and ten unique classes each with their own starting location, faction status, primary skills, and unique place in the Warcraft world. Learn secondary skills such as Herbalism or Alchemy to use your enviornment to help you in your quest.

There used to be a few in the early 90’s. The names escape me now, sorry about that. They were text based though, but back then we only had some very slow dial up connections too. They were probably the closest thing to what you are looking for. Maybe it could be possible to do with a peer to peer network program like netmeeting.
