Which Is Better? Wamu Or Ing Bank For Online Free Checking Accounts?

I used to have a NetBank checking account but I didn’t like their customer service and also didn’t like the fact that they hold funds (checks deposited) for a really long time, so I’m thinking of trying out either WaMu or ING. Which should I go with? I’m kinda leaning towards WaMu because I just read on their site that they give out free checks for as long as you have an account with them. Could you please let me know your experience with either one or both?

I have had WaMu for about 6 years and I love it. You can do a lot of stuff with the online account!

ING has lower interest rate. I have Citibank saving, HSBC and american dream saving… forgoto what the bank is… anyways, WaMu offers good interest rate, they don’t place hold on business’ checks and they transfer money between checking and saving accounts instantly so it saves me 3 days in transfer. I love WaMu!

Just an FYI, NetBank failed and is now owned by ING. I had NetBank and actually loved them for the longest time. I never received a fee for anything.
My account transfered to an ING Savings account. To get Electric Orange(their checking account without checks) from ING they do perform a credit check because there is a LOC automatically attached to the account for overdraft purposes.
I have since then opened up a Wamu account. I haven’t had any problems with it except that the savings account does incur ATM fees from foreign ATM usage, something I did not know and received $10 in fees and they would not waive. I closed the savings but still have the checking and haven’t had any real problems. But I do still have my local credit union in case I need to actually cash a check

Do you have any military parents or spouse? If so I think USAA is the best. USAA also allows you to deposit checks from the comfort of your home as well.
Don’t know about the others but I do know the free checks is correct, however these are not carbon copy checks. It’s the bare minimum but it works for me. If you want carbon copy or other extra features to the check then it costs extra.

ING’s bank accounts are completely online…meaning you cant whip out a checkbook at your local store to pay for something…they do however mail paper checks to addresses that you specify, free of charge…I have ING because it also yields interest and I don’t write alot of checks, it just depends on what you prefer

I’ve been with ING direct orange savings for 3 years, and the electric orange checking for 8 months. I have an HSBC account as well, because the yield is higher. I also have a local bank for paper checks, and their website stinks. ING is the best web interface by far, but their rates aren’t the best. I’ve also been able to get a real live person on the phone who speaks English as a first language, which I found impressive for an Internet only bank.
